Putting Glass Walls on Pennsylvania Slaughterhouses So We Can See Behind Closed Doors from FAUN Friends Of Animals United
Howard and Son Meat Packing

Address: 8392 Sharon-Mercer Rd, Mercer PA, 16137
Establishment No.: m17681

USDA Inspection Report: 1 Mar 2011

Code: 06D01
Violation: 416.4(b)

Citation: While performing post-mortem inspection activities at Est.17681 at 0930, I noticed that there were cobwebs attached to the large Reznor heater hanging from the ceiling above the head wash cabinet. The head wash cabinet was not going to be used on today's inspection activities. These cobwebs were attached to the back of the heater and to the rail and support brackets. This deficiency was away from any product and would pose no food contact hazard. 9 CFR 416.(b) states: Non-food-contact surfaces of facilities, equipment, and utensils used in the operation of the establishment must be cleaned and sanitized as frequently as necessary to prevent the creation of insanitary conditions and the adulteration of product. I notified plant management that this serves as written notification that failure to comply with regulatory requirements could result in additional administrative and/or regulatory action.

Regulation:

416.4(b) Non-food-contact surfaces of facilities, equipment, and utensils used in the operation of the establishment must be cleaned and sanitized as frequently as necessary to prevent the creation of insanitary conditions and the adulteration of product.
