USDA Inspection Report: 6 Dec 2010
Citation: HAT Category IV- AnteMortem Handling On Monday December 6, 2010, at approximately 09:25, while in the slaughter room, I observed an employee move two beef into the chute leading to the knocking box. The employee and I were both unaware that there were two pigs already in the alley, and the first beef stepped over the pigs. I immediately called to the employee to stop moving the beef, which he did, leaving the second beef behind the two pigs. The pigs were not injured as the beef had stepped over and around them. Plant personnel immediately corrected the situation by separating the animals, and then brought the pigs back into the ante-mortem pens. I observed them for any injuries or abnormalities, and found none. The employee said he did not know there were pigs in the alley and it had not happened before. This is a violation of 9 CFR 313.2(a). I informed [redacted] of this non-compliance and that an NR would be issued.
313.2(a) Driving of livestock from the unloading ramps to the holding pens and from the holding pens to the stunning area shall be done with a minimum of excitement and discomfort to the animals. Livestock shall not be forced to move faster than a normal walking speed.
